Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin Killed

From Associated Press

BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.

Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified.

A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver's death.

"The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest," Hamil said.

Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment.

Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.

Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.

Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken.

Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.

Irwin told the Australian television program "A Current Affair" that "killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me."

He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Oregon, and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

Catching Up

First a soccer update. On November 12th, Mark's team drew 1-1 in an away match in Hollister. The game time was changed at the last minute so we only had 11 players. It was a tough game but they did well. Mark scored a goal but it was disallowed because it was a bad goal kick that did not come out of the area.

On November 19th they played the last game of the season and won 2-0. Once again they could not score a goal after many attacks until Mark Butterworth knocked one in, a volley from his left foot from a corner.

It's been a fun season and I'm sad it's over.

Another Song + Defeat at last

I put another song on my site. It's more of a rocker. The guitars were done by an Australian called Nick Abrahams, all the drums and singing are me. It's called Alone.

Mark's team finally lost on Saturday in the most frustrating fashion. They lost to a team that had not won a game all year. Mark's team played so well, much better than in any other game. They had around 40 shots including at least 5 one on one's with the goalie. The other team scored near the end due to some bad refereeing. The ball was kicked out from our defense, hit one of players and bounced back to the goalie, who picked it up. Ref gives a free kick to the other team for backpass. He then tells the defense they cannot move until the "shot is taken" so when they roll the indirect kick to the side no defender moves. Very frustrating. But they played well and the other team's coach is a nice guy who deserved a win.

Soccer this week

On Saturday (29th) Mark's team won again 2-0. Mark scored the first goal against the run of play and then we looked safe. The team has won every game and has not conceeded a goal for 5 weeks. Mark has now scored 5 goals (I think).

After soccer Mark's signing up for NFL Flag Football (American Football). He's always wanted to play and it's new to Morgan Hill.

Monday was halloween. Amy went as The Bedtime Queen, which basically means she wore her pjyamas and dressing gown. Mark went as a soldier with wounds all over his face. I found a cool screwdriver through the head thing.

Next up for us is Thanksgiving.

Song of the week +

I did another new song that I think is pretty good. I think it's my best, Stella says second best. It's called "I Gotta Make You Love Me" http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=314739

Another win for Mark's soccer team. 3-0 against the other Morgan Hill team. Mark had a quiet game but draws a lot of attention from the defenders making room for others.

Mushroom's for lunch on Saturday for Grannie's birthday. Mark went to a party Saturday night, then they went to the beach on Sunday.

More Soccer & Songs

Another good win for Mark's team this week. 3-0 against one of the tougher teams. Mark scored a goal in front of Granny and Grandad which made him really happy.

Another new song on my music site http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=314739 called Crumbling, it's a little different, kind of an experimental electronica style song.

Mark & Amy went on vacation to San Jose on Saturday (that's a 15 mile trip). They went to a hotel, ate out, and then went to the "Tech Museum" on Sunday.

We watched Kingdom of Heaven & Kicking and Screaming this weekend.

I really enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven though it got bad reviews. Interesting history. Kicking and Screaming was good mindless comedy.
